Keeping Active While on the Road

Summer is here and folks are finally getting back out on the road after a long time of confinement. It is important that we don’t allow ourselves to slip back into bad habits of inactivity while on vacation. “Getting exercise in while on the road can be challenging. Long hours and eating out can take a toll on our body and mind; and make exercising fall by the wayside. While you are traveling you must be committed to getting some exercise in most days. Every hotel has at least some cardio equipment; and body weight exercises can still burn calories and work up a sweat. Grab a few laps in the hotel pool if they have one. If all else fails go for a walk around the area you’re visiting. Just be active!” Brian Andrews, NexGen Fitness Director of Fitness & Expansion. Here are a few ideas to keep you moving even when you don’t have access to any exercise equipment.

Stand up! Sit Down! Repeat!

Body weight exercises can be very beneficial and require no equipment at all. You can do squats, push-ups, sit-ups, planks, even something as simple as sitting on a chair or the edge of the bed and standing up. Three sets of 20 will get your day off to a good start.

Push Up

Push ups require no equipment and are easily modified by performing the pushing motion on an incline with your hands on the counter or dresser. You can also modify traditional push ups by performing them with your knees on the ground if you are unable to perform the full motion.

Do Some Laps

If your hotel has a pool or you are staying by the beach, go for a swim. Swim laps for at least 20 minutes to get the greatest benefit. Before you relax in the sun, swim a few laps then you can kick back and enjoy the view.

Take a Walk

You can take a walking tour, stroll on the beach or even walk up and down the stairs in your hotel. All of these are just as good as a treadmill; just keep up your speed and your heart rate.

Now get out there and take a trip, enjoy your vacation and keep yourself active and fit!
