Supplement of the Month – Folic Acid
Most of us know that Folic Acid plays a very important role in pregnancy. It helps to prevent birth and neural tube defects in unborn children. So most women’s vitamins contain a high dose of Folic Acid. However, many of us probably don’t realize that the benefits of Folic Acid extend beyond pregnancy and can benefit both women and men. Folic Acid has been shown to help prevent heart disease, prevent Alzheimer’s disease, fight against type-2 diabetes, and even treat depression. Recommended intake ranges from 400 mcg to 800 mcg. While you can easily obtain these levels through supplementation, Folic Acid can be obtained through food such as dark, leafy greens, asparagus, fortified whole grains, beans and legumes, and chicken liver (mmm chicken liver!). Just one 3.5-ounce serving of chicken liver provides 193% of the daily-recommended value.
